‘Fingers of development that connect the town to the river’
+3 Architecture have recently completed the design and fit-out of a BREEAM ‘Excellent’, landmark office headquarters for BT in South Tyneside. Forming phase one of a wider regeneration masterplan the project was won in competition against a number of the UK’s largest and most respected practices. The site is on former docks and the brief, developed in collaboration with the regional development agency One North East, called for a bold contemporary scheme that will establish the quality benchmark for future developments in the area.
The scheme has been designed to reconnect the town to the river and is characterised by ‘fingers’ of development that are separated by landscaped ‘slipways’ that provide inclined pedestrian links down to the waterfront. The simple, bold form and language have been praised by the Commission for Architecture in the Built Environment.
