‘A contemporary bridge structure based on the form and geometry of a leaf’
Enclose-X-Pose is a new cycle and bridleway bridge over the River Douglas near Preston in Lancashire. Our approach to this RIBA competition was defined by a day-long visit to the proposed site in June. A beautiful day with clear blue skies and a gentle breeze, we were taken by the simplicity, elegance and calmness of the site. Our attitudes were informed by questions of scale, form, spatial arrangement and relationship to context as well as the practical considerations of structure, buildability and support.
The proposed bridge is a simple, shallow arch in section that spans the full distance from each embankment, tapering at its centre to minimise visual impact in this sensitive, landscape setting whilst at the same time naturally widening in plan to create a mid-span viewing area. The bridge is cut into the embankment on both sides as if growing and evolving out of the existing landscape and in so doing creating a strong sense of arrival and departure and a sense of theatre to the whole experience.
