Simon D

Simon is Managing Director and co-founder of +3 Architecture. He trained at Newcastle and Oxford Universities before spending 12 years working in London for some of the UK’s most respected practices on large scale commercial developments. The lure of his native North East was too much to resist and in 2004 he returned ‘home’ before establishing +3 Architecture with his long-time architectural collaborator Matthew Margetts in 2008. Despite the challenging economic climate, the practice has grown every year and more importantly has become an award-winning practice with projects of all scales across a wide range of sectors.

Outside of work Simon is keen to offset his unhealthy interest in fantastic food and alcohol with lengthy cycle rides, long walks and any sport involving a ball! He is slowly weaning himself off his car ‘habit’ and when not at work loves spending time with his beautiful family.


Matthew (Mags) is Director and co-founder of +3 Architecture. He graduated from Newcastle University in 1997 with a First Class degree. He won the RIBA President’s Medal for his dissertation and was exhibited at the RIBA Silver Medal exhibition. He then went on to work at a number of high profile practices in London. Since 2003 Matthew has combined his practice work with an involvement in architectural education where he ran a Diploma studio at Sheffield University for 6 years and is now head of final year at Newcastle University. In 2009 Matthew initiated the ArchiGRAD programme ( for underemployed architecture graduates. At +3 he is primarily responsible for managing the design process and output of the office, and has established a rigorous design methodology for the practice. He has also developed the practice’s expertise in consultation and engagement led design, and oversees the practice’s growing research activities. The practice also has a growing reputation for its graphic communication skills which have been informed by Matthew’s academic work.


Stephen joined +3 Architecture in 2008 having recently qualified as an architect from Newcastle University. He has wide ranging experience of projects in a number of sectors with particular experience in the commercial field and mixed use urban regeneration schemes. Stephen has combined his practice work with an involvement in architectural education where he has given a number of lectures on the use of Building Information Modelling within architectural practices.

Matt joined +3 Architecture in 2008 having graduated with a first from Newcastle University that summer. Having recently qualified as an architect he has experience of commercial, leisure and masterplanning projects and has also completed a number of smaller residential and community projects. In 2009 he completed a 6-month collaborative innovative partnership with Newcastle University based around developing an inhouse capability in building performance modelling. He also has responsibility for graphic design, marketing and web design.

Originally from Sheffield Rachel studied Part 1 Architecture at Newcastle University, 3 years away from the city heralded her return to the North East. Rachel joined +3 Architecture in 2010 having graduated from Nottingham University with distinction earlier that year. Having recently qualified as an architect she has experience of large scale civic projects and has also completed a number of smaller residential projects. Rachel has involvement in developing new areas of the practice including small projects and office consolidation, she is also the social secretary!

After completing a degree in architectural technology in 2004 Paul has worked in the architectural industry on a series of projects from small scale domestic to international leisure venues. Plus 3 have supported Paul in continuing his Architectural education having recently completed his RIBA Part 1 Architectural exams at Oxford Brookes and was pleased to receive a RIBA award for his efforts. Within plus 3 he contributes the technical side of the office whilst also being given the opportunity to be involved with the architectural side of things developing his design skills and strengthening his portfolio. He is also our resident blogger / tweeter.

Outside of work he enjoys design, fashion and film he is also involved in the running of Reebok Cross fit Tyneside a strength and conditioning gym in Newcastle. His guilty pleasures are reading Abigail Ahern’s daily Blog and watching terrible romantic comedies (chic flicks)

Simon R

After graduating from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2001, Simon spent 9 years working at Ryder Architecture in their London and Newcastle offices, before joining +3 Architecture in November 2010. Simon has extensive experience of designing and delivering major projects in a variety of sectors including commercial, education, healthcare, urban design and more recently major civic projects. During his time at +3 Architecture, Simon has worked on a £30M leisure and civic quarter, and is currently involved in the refurbishment of a Grade II listed Town Hall. Alongside his role as project architect, Simon has key interests in sustainable and passive design methods, and the utilisation of BIM technology as part of the architectural design process.

Away from the office, Simon is a keen walker and long distance runner, enjoys cooking and travelling, and continues his unrivalled support for an unnamed League 1 football team!


Blanche joined +3 Architecture in April 2008, taking up the role of Office Manager. The majority of her career has been spent working in the NHS, most recently as a Practice Manager for a large GP surgery in South West London, before relocating back to Newcastle with her family in the summer of 2007. She has overall responsibility for all aspects of the management of the practice.

Outside of work her interests mainly revolve around spending time with her husband and daughters. She enjoys reading, travelling, eating out and attending regular Zumba classes.




Gavin joined +3 Architecture in January 2012 after attending the archiGRAD scheme following graduation from Newcastle University. So far he has been involved on both large and small scale masterplanning projects, commercial projects and competition work. His main interest in architecture is in sustainable approaches and reuse of once derelict buildings.

Outside of work he enjoys windsurfing, cycling and photography.
